Hey there, I wanted to take a few minutes to talk to you about essential oils and show you scientific proof that they can in fact help in restoring mental and emotional balance.
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their delicate aromas and natural healing powers. By combining their therapeutic properties, aromatherapy works to improve physical, mental and emotional balance.
They are made up of very small molecules, which means they can easily bring their unique healing properties to every cell of the body. Traditionally used to help ease muscular aches and pains, improve circulation and ease sinus congestion, they also have a positive effect on the skin, penetrating into the deeper layers to encourage the process of cellular renewal, enhance blood circulation and help problems such as acne, eczema and ageing skin.
But, essential oils also have a dynamic effect on our emotional state.
Let's start with a short anatomy & physiology lesson:
Linked to some of the deepest parts of the brain governing instinct, memory and emotion, sense of smell is the most primitive of our senses. Essential oils can be inhaled with the air we breathe and detected via olfactory membrane; body’s very specialized ‘smelling apparatus’. As the aromatic molecules are carried deep into the nasal cavity, the message from the nose is sent, almost instantaneously, to the brain. The information sent from the olfactory membrane is received by the limbic system and the cerebral cortex. The limbic system supports functions such as emotion, behavior, motivation, and long term memory. The cerebral cortex plays a key role in factors such as memory, attention, perception, cognition, awareness, consciousness, thought and language. Because of this direct connection between the limbic system and the olfactory membrane, aromas can trigger emotional and even physical responses and allow vivid memory recall of people or places.
Essential oils can help transform our moods and move us from one state of mind to another. Since olfaction has an immense impact on our brain, and our brain controls all of our actions, it is easy to see how essential oils may have a direct impact on our emotional and mental well-being. They bring changes in emotional behavior, on a conscious level, by creating changes in moods on a subconscious level. A number of studies has shown that essential oils, in appropriate doses, may help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, panic, nervous tension, stress and other emotional and mental conditions.
Here is some scientific research and proof:
Scientists from Republic of Korea, conducted a controlled group study on effects of the aromatherapy on anxiety and sleep quality in cardiovascular ICU unit, using a blend of lavender (Lavandula officinalis), roman chamomile (Chamomile roman), and neroli (Citrus aurantium) and concluded that those in the aromatherapy group exhibited reduced levels of anxiety and increased quality of sleep. Another study by researchers from Howard University, showed that essential oils are emerging as a promising source for modulation of the GABAergic system and sodium ion channels. Several pharmacologic agents (such as benzodiazepine) target the GABA system and modulate the overall effect of GABA. The research is now showing that not only are essential oils are viable source for treatment of emotional and mental disorders but their constituents may be a viable source for further improvement on the current pharmaceutical medication. (2) What we are also seeing is that scientists are looking at specific components that may trigger certain disorders and they are finding that essential oils are successful in treatment, without bringing on other unwanted symptoms.
Globally, more than 300 million people suffer from depression, and 260 million suffer from anxiety disorders—many of whom live with both conditions. A study by the World Health Organization found that such disorders cost the global economy $1 trillion in lost productivity each year. People are unable to work. The ongoing emotional and mental disorders have manifested into physical problems and result in no medical diagnosis. They are being prescribed harsh pharmaceutical drugs (benzodiazepines and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors SSRIs) to treat the most urgent symptoms of their disorders while developing other indicators.
Research is proving that Aromatherapy and use of essential oils can have a positive effect on mental and emotional balance. Research is also proving that not only are essential oils a viable natural treatment of many emotional and mental disorders, it’s also showing that they do so without creating additional imbalances.
Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in folk medicine and their history intertwines with the history of herbal medicine. Up until the last hundred years, this was the main form of medicine. Plants were always thought of as having healing powers, and modern day science is proving that they indeed do.
